The Rotary Four Way Test

Is it the truth?  Is it fair to all concerned?  Will it build goodwill and better friendships?  Will it be beneficial to all concerned

Rotary Reflection

For food in a world where many walk in hunger
For peace in a world where many walk in fear
For friends in a world where many walk alone
And for the opportunity to serve others through Rotary,
May we be truly thankful!

Speaker February 23rd, 2021 - Mara Shaw, National Farmers Union
Ana Sutherland introduced our speaker Mara Shaw, who is the Executive Director of the National Farmers Union of Canada.  Before her presentation Mara gave us an update on her daughter Karena whom we all know.  She is attending Carleton University now, and is Co-President of their Rotaract Club.

Speaker Points:
  • The National Farmers Union is not really a union as we know it, but a common voice for policy development. For example, it was this group that influenced the decision to keep bovine growth hormone out of Canadian milk.
  • Our food system is fragile, and during Covid 19, farmers have been adapting. Consumers are preferring local sources and farmers’ markets are important for this.At this time, may have turned to online sales.
  • The NFU is concerned about the issue of migrant workers.
  • The NFU is committed to combat racism, they have called for universal child care and pharmacare, they have stood with farmers in India, and are working on climate solutions.
  • Their website is www.NFU.ca.

Speaker thanks was provided by John Farrow.

Welcome back Jackie Blakney!! :)

Fun Master - Robert Reid

No one was able to guess Robert’s theme for the day, but there were no fines for that.  The fines quiz was based on facts about Perseverance and Ingenuity.  Perseverance was launched from Earth on July 30th and landed on Mars on February 18th.  It left Earth at 24,600 mph.  It landed on Mars with a 70 feet wide parachute.  It entered the Mars’ atmosphere at 12,000 mph.  NASA had previously sent 5 Rovers to Mars.  Ingenuity is the name of the helicopter that went along on the mission.  Well, we don’t seem to have a lot of space nerds within our membership, as lots of fines were collected.

Happy/Sad Bucks

Elizabeth paid some sad bucks for thinking about the money spent on the NASA project, and what that could do to make our world a better place.  John Gale joined in with another sad buck, and Lise paid as well for her agreement with Elizabeth.  Leslie was very happy to be able to go to the Y this week.  John Gale is very happy that his knee surgery is to take place this Saturday, but he said he will probably have a sad buck for the pain next week.  Jackie added $20 of happiness for being back to Rotary.  Jim announced that he is really happy (?) that Elizabeth volunteered him to coordinate Easter Seals once again.  Bill was sad to report that both his daughter and son-in-law have come down with Covid 19, but relieved that they are experiencing mild symptoms.

Announcements

Mike Moore from the Frontenac Club is coordinating our effort to assist KFL&A Public Health with Covid 19 vaccinations.  He has been very pleased with the good response by Rotarians.  We are hoping to provide two people for three-hour shifts.  Rotarians will work in pairs and he will match up spouses or anyone else who would like to partner with someone.  He will try to assign people to the same shift every week so that there is continuity.  There will be a partial start up on March 8th.  Please invite your friends as well as your spouses to take part.
The clinic will operate between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and you will be expected to arrive at 8:30 if you are on at 9.  Weekends will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Volunteers will not receive vaccination preference.  KFL&A Public Health indicated that they assess it as a low risk activity, much like being out in a store in the community.  The Invista Centre will be our focus.  There will be a 30-minute training video provided, and it is not necessary to have a Covid 19 test before participating.
Mike is still waiting to hear from Rotaracters but about 40 – 50 Rotarians and family members have already volunteered.  You don’t need to commit for the whole 6 months that it is expected to operate.  Mike will be in charge of scheduling.
The deadline to commit to helping with this project is February 26th.
Shift times have been added to the application form, so please go back to it and add the days of the week and times that you could be available.
You can wear Rotary crested clothing, and you will be provided with medical grade masks.
Mike will be attending a dry run, on March 1st, and he will have more information for us after that.  Note that you can edit and update your form at any time.

Greg Mumford on behalf of Youth Service (New Generations).
The Adventure in Citizenship will be running virtually out of Ottawa May 1 – 5.  This is open to students 16 to 18 years of age.  If you know of youth whom you would like to propose, this needs to be done within the next two weeks so that applications may be finalized.  Greg has been in contact with Frontenac Secondary and Kingston Senior Secondary (the new school), so if you have contacts at any of the other schools please let Greg know.

The Kingston Senior Secondary School has been running a Winter Warmth program, providing warm clothing to students in need.  This could be a partnership if anyone is interested, but the program is still taking shape.  The school is also interested in providing some students with sports equipment, as well as doing something to assist transitions to post secondary education.  There are students within the school with the same needs as the students who attend Pathways but for whom this assistance is not given.  If you are interested in this, please contact Ana or Greg and we may be able to create a project.
Ana, Leslie, Greg and Heather Nogrady have talked about this and they will formulate a plan.

Queen’s Rotaract is holding a trivia night on February 25th to raise money for Isthmus.  Ana will email the necessary information to all members.  You can sign up on the Queen’s Rotaract website and this will be in the email.

District Conference has changed dates from October this year to May 6 – 7, 2022, with the hope that this can be an in-person meeting.

President Elect Training (PETS) will be held using monthly meetings instead of one weekend.  Anyone can attend.

District Assembly has been postponed to a date yet to be determined.

Bill Gray will be the guest speaker at the Madras East Rotary Club tomorrow morning our time.  John will send everyone an email with the poster containing necessary information.  This is an opportunity to meet with Rotarians in Chennai India.

John Gale
Centennial Committee has received a request for funding from Lionhearts, as they would like to establish a food hub in Kingston.  They will need to set up a commercial kitchen, and the cost is expected to be about $43,000.  John feels that we could do this if all the Kingston Clubs work together, with the possible addition of further grants.  John has given information about this proposal to Bill Egnatoff for the Community Service Committee’s consideration.

Chase the Ace!

  1. Jim Rymerson won the first draw for $10 and a chance to draw the Ace of Clubs. He drew the Jack of Spades.
  2. Jackie Blakney drew the 3 of Spades.
