A collaboration to set up a medical physics M.Sc. program in Kenya

John Schreiner receives loaf of bread as thank-you for his talk

Dr. John Schreiner, Queen's Professor Emeritus in The Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy brings a physicist's expertise to the field of radiation oncology. As a leader in sharing such expertise in low- and middle-income countries, he spoke to our club January 20, 2026 of his collaboration with Kenyan colleagues to establish a Master of Science program in Medical Physics.

In the developing world there is as low a ratio of operating radiation oncology machines as 1 per 50 million people. However the issue is not availability of machines - it is an issue of trained personnel. John is working with colleagues in Kenya to help establish an M.Sc. program in medical physics to help correct the situation.

Hear John's entire talk and note how the collaboration operates just as Rotary does.

Speakers in March

Cataraqui-Kingston Rotary was pleased to welcome John Andrew on March 3rd as our guest speaker. Representing Hope Air, John shared how the organization is breaking down barriers to healthcare by ensuring Canadians can access the medical care they need — regardless of where they live or their financial circumstances.

Hope Air is dedicated to easing the stress of travel by providing families from coast to coast with free flights and accommodations, helping patients focus on what matters most: their health and recovery.

On March 17th we welcomed our own Linda Schmalz and Linda Clouthier from the Kingston Rotary Club (a.k.a. “the Lindas”) to speak about a new fundraising event for Easter Seals - an open water swim taking place on Saturday, July 4th. This will be modelled after the very successful swim that takes place in Ottawa every year.

There will be ample opportunities for members to get involved. Scan the QR Code the volunteer.

On March 31st, we welcomed Cynthia Surette, President of the Napanee Rotary Club. Cynthia talked to us about their 100th Anniversary Gala on Friday, May 1st, and the projects they are working on. It was a great presentation from the President of a very active Rotary Club.
