Star Catchers was supported by our Club through our Fall Community Grants in 2025.

The Screening Room is a 3-screen independent movie theatre located in the heart of downtown Kingston, Ontario. Since 2011, the cinema has been locally owned & operated by Wendy Huot. She took over from Terry, who owned & ran the cinema for the 10 years prior. Dan Wannemacher founded and built the theatre in the mid-1990’s. We last had Wendy speak to us pre-Covid. She’s back to tell us what’s happened in the movie landscape since then. |

Vicki Casey, B.A. (Hon), B.S.T., has worked in child welfare for 20 years, with the first 17 years as a front-line Family Services Worker. She spent much of her time working with children ages 0-6, which made for a seamless transition to her current role as Supervisor of A Great Start for Families Kahwà:tsire Ronwatiyenawá:se Centre, which is an early intervention/prevention centre for families that have children under the age of 6. She loves supporting families and helping them to learn their potential.

Homes for Heroes Foundation

Homes For Heroes’ tiny home village in Kingston is a place of community, camaraderie, and celebration. Opened in June 2024, the Kingston Veterans’ Village was made possible through the support of all levels of government, national stakeholders, local businesses, social groups, and individuals across Canada. The local steering committee, led by Mark Hutchings, played an instrumental role in the success of this project. The village’s design pays homage to Kingston’s beautiful architecture, featuring 20 tiny homes, a resource center, case manager offices, therapy rooms, community gardens, and outdoor recreation spaces. Almost Home and The YGK Thrift Store

Almost Home is a home-away-from-home for families with ill or injured children, a place of comfort and respite for families whose children are receiving medical treatment in Kingston area hospitals. Almost Home operates YGK Thrift, a clothing store. All proceeds support Almost Home. Sayward Berry splits her time between the home and the thrift story so will give an overview of what the home means to families who stay there and the story of the thrift store that supports the home. In her own words: I have worked for YGK Thrift and Almost Home for the last 4 years. While my role at YGK Thrift has changed over these past 4 years as I added working directly at Almost Home, the passion for what I do remains. I have always been a people-oriented person with an extensive background in retail management, but I have found my happiness working for a non-profit. The meaningful connections I have been able to make with both the community groups who we partner with and the customers who shop at the thrift store, is what drives me to make YGK Thrift the best possible shop it can be. |
